One of the tribes in Arfak mountains
The local government of Arfak Mountains regency are going to conduct Festival of Arfak from 8 - 12 October 2018. The tribes who live in the mountains will show their dance performance, songs, traditional costumes, food, kaki seribu houses, and other interesting cultural activities.
Visitors who are interested in seeing the festival can fly to Manokwari city and continue their trip by 4WD cars to the mountains. There are cars that go back and forth between Manokwari city and Anggi lakes every day.

Visitors can stay in the kaki seribu houses of the villagers who live along the Anggi lakes area. Kaki means legs and seribu means one thousand. So, kaki seribu house means a house that has got one thousand pillars that support it. In reality the pillars are fewer.
Arfak mountains have been famous around the world as a must see destination for birdwatchers. There are a lot of species of tropical birds including such endemic paradise birds as Western Parotia, Magnificent Bird of Paradise, Black Sicklebill and Cinnamon Ground Dove. There is also Vogelkop Bowerbird that can build a bower and  decorat it with beautiful flowers and other colorful articles to attract his female counterpart.

Tourists who go to Arfak mountains during this festival can go hiking to the tops of the mountains and see the wonderful view of the lakes and its surrounding area. Snorkeling Vacation Trips in Manokwari

Snorkeling tours with Charles Roring
Marine Life in Manokwari Waters
I offer snorkeling trips for visitors who are interested in spending their vacation in Manokwari. There are several coral reef areas which we can visit to see a lot of species of fish such as Surgeonfish, Spadefish, Angelfish, Butterflyfish, Anemonefish, Rabbitfish, Parrotfish, Coris, Wrasse and Grouper. There are also sea urchin, sea star, sea cucumber, sea grass and sometimes sea turtle which we could see during the snorkeling trips.
Visitors need to bring their own snorkeling mask, snorkel and flippers in order to see the underwater marine life that thrive in the coral reef. Those who want to take pictures of the fish and other marine creatures can bring underwater camera. I provide lifejackets especially for tourists who want to wear them. This will prevent visitors from standing on reef. We all know that coral reef is a beautiful, very rich but fragile marine environment. During the snorkeling trips, participants need practice positive buoyancy. The duration of the snorkeling trips can be as short as one day to as long as three days. The snorkeling trip can be done in other areas such as Tambrauw or Raja Ampat.
Coral Reef Environment in Manokwari
Rainforest Tour
In addition to marine tour, I also offer rainforest tour that usually lasts for 3 days. During the tour, visitors will go hiking in he forest to watch paradise birds, see cuscus possum and butterflies and various tropical plants. I and local villagers have built huts in the forest which tourists use for several days. There are mattrasses and cooking equipment. To watch cuscus possum, we usually do night walk in the jungle usually after dinner.
Accommodation
There are a lot of hotels which visitors can choose to stay for several days during the snorkeling tour. When visitors decide to take rainforest trip, they will stay in the huts for several days to maximize their chance to see more wildlife. I suggest that visitors also bring their camera with telephoto lens and binoculars.

Underwater Pictures and Marine Preservation

Affordable snorkeling tours by Charles Roring
Marine Life in West Papua waters
Here are some underwater pictures that I made when I went snorkeling in the suburb of Manokwari. I used a small action camera - Brica B-Pro 5 Alpha edition that I bought from an online store. I bought the new camera last month because my old one had already been broken for several years. The quality of the pictures it creates is not very sharp compared to my previous camera Nikon AW120.
I need to take pictures of marine environment so that I could use them for writing articles in my blog. I often share my photographs of coral reef and fish in facebook to raise awareness about the importance of reducing plastic use in our modern life.

Snorkeling trip in West Papua
Every body knows that plastic is harmful for the environment especially the marine one. For instance, the plastic bags that we get from supermarket cause a lot of deaths among sea turtles. Plastic bags look transparent when floating. Turtles consider them as jellyfish. They eat a lot of those plastic bags and then die.
Coral reef is a very rich marine environment. It is the habitat of butterflyfish, moorish idol, clown fish, sea star, grouper, sea cucumber, and a lot more. Because I work as tourist guide, I frequently offer snorkeling tours who plan to visit West Papua. Coral reef can be seen when we enjoy snorkeling or freediving.

Lesser Birds of Paradise in Sorong Regency

Birding Tour in Sorong regency of West Papua, Indonesia
Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor)
I have just returned from Sorong city after taking 1 week trip around the forest to watch Lesser Birds of Paradise and other birds. The name of the forest was Klabolo. It was located in the east of Sorong, approximately one and a half hour ride plus 3 hours walk. It was a difficult trip because the path was muddy and slippery.  I went there with some government officials who wanted to help local people develop their forest and village as tourist destination. One of the main attractions of the forest was the birds of paradise.
Lesser Birds of Paradise like to dance in the mornings and in the afternoons. Usually two, three or even five male compete against one another in order to attract their female birds of paradise.
When we visited the lek in the afternoons, we arrived too early. There were no birds dancing at that time. Later, they began to call one another and gathered in the branches of the tree where they usually chose for their courtship dance. The courtship dance performance started at approximately 16.00 and was still going more intense at 17.00 when we left the birding site.
For visitors who were interested in watching these birds, they need to bring their own binoculars, camera with telephoto lens of approx. 600 to 800 mm. There are no hotels in the forest, only simple huts for tourists. I could organize birding tours for 3 to 4 days or even more.
If you are interested, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com or by whatsapp to: +6281332245180.

Birding tour in manokwari
Blyth's hornbill in rainforest of Manokwari
I often organize tours to lowland forest of Manokwari for visitors who want to watch birds. There are a lot of species of them which we could see including the Papuan Blyth's Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus). Locally, it is called Taun-taun. The birds can be watched if we bring binoculars or spotting scope. I usually choose Dopi river as my birding site. It is also the habitat for Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Palm Cockatoo, Black-capped Lory, Coconut Lorikeet, and Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Beautiful Fruit Dove, Oriental Dollarbird, Azure Kingfisher, Yellow-billed Kingfisher, and a lot of other species of birds.
Visitors need to fly into Manokwari city if they want to enjoy hiking and birding in this forest. As a tourist guide, I have organized numerous tours to tropical rainforest in West Papua for visitors who are interested.
The duration of this snorkeling trip is approximately 2 to 3 days. It can be combined with snorkeling trip to coral reef areas of around Manokwari to see fish and other marine creatures. Visitors who want to enjoy snorkeling need to bring their own snorkeling devices such as mask, snorkel and fins.

Marine Life in Manokwari

Snorkeling and freediving tour in Manokwari
Marine Life in Manokwari
These are pictures of marine life in Manokwari waters. I made them when I went freediving to a beach in northeast territory of this regency. The coral reef can be seen from depths of 1 to 15 meters with such marine creatures as diagonal sweetlips, convict surgeonfish, anemonefish, damselfish, moorish idol, butterflyfish and a lot more. There are also urchin, blue sea star, and sea cucumber.
Freediving and snorkeling tour in Manokwari
Coralf Reef environment in Manokwari
To take the pictures, I used a Nikon Coolpix AW120. I only did freediving to a depth of around 3 to 7 meters. I had to hold my breath for at least 30 seconds so that I could make several shots of the coral reef and the fish. To prevent high water pressure from harming my ears, I equalized several times in deeper water.

Since our birding tour is carried out along a mountain ridge, bringing a spotting scope will greatly enhance the birding experience.

Pinon Imperial Pigeon

Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon) lives in tropical rainforest of West Papua - photo by Charles Roring
Pinon Imperial Pigeon
Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon) lives in tropical rainforest of West Papua. They are important seed dispersers that maintain the forest. April is the mating season of the bird. When I guided a Canadian tourist a few days ago, I saw some Pinon Imperial Pigeon mating in trees. Because they were bigger than the average birds, I could take several good pictures of them. In addition to pigeons, I also saw Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Rainbow Bee-eater and Oriental Dollarbird in the forest.Walking deeper into the jungle, I could see Lesser Birds of Paradise performing courtship dance to attract their female birds.

Birding in Fulgidus Forest of Tambrauw Regency

This yellow paradise bird (Cendrawasih Kuning) or Lesser Birds of Paradise lives in the forest of West Papua.
Fulgidus is the name of forest in West Papua that I promote as birding destination for visitors who want to watch birds especially the ones that are endemic to tropical rainforest such as Lesser Birds of Paradise, Magnificent Riflebird, King Bird of Paradise, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, and Western Crowned Pigeon, Western Black-capped Lory, Yellow-faced Myna, Golden Myna, and etc.
Visitors need a pair of binoculars, and spotting scope to enjoy birding in Fulgidus forest. Wearing darker color clothing, hiking boots or sport shoes is important for exploring the rainforest and birds of the forest.

Getting to Fulgidus forest

It is not difficult to go to Fulgidus forest of Tambrauw Mountains. You need to take an international flight from your country to Jakarta. It is the  capital of Indonesia. There are such airlines as Garuda, Batik, Sriwijaya and NAM air that provide regular flights to Sorong city of West Papua province. Red-necked Phalarope in Tambrauw Mountains

Birding trip in Tambrauw mountains of West Papua
Red-necked Phalarope in winter plumage
Last year when I made an exploratory trip to Tambrauw Mountains, I saw a small bird in Fef valley right in front of the new office building of Tambrauw's regent. At that time I did not know its species name. I only know that it was a shore bird. I made some pictures of the bird and then did the identification works at home several days later.
To my surprise, from the field guide book the Birds of New Guinea (written by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler), I found that the bird's name was Red-necked Phalarope (Phalaropus lobatus). The bird lives in Artic region of North America and Eurasia during the breeding period.  In winter time, this small bird fly for thousands of kilometers and land in the interior region of Tambrauw mountains.
The regency of Tambrauw is located in the vogelkop region of New Guinea. Most of its land is still covered by tropical rainforest. It is the natural habitat of hundreds of species of birds including birds of paradise such as Lesser Birds of Paradise, Magnificent Riflebird, King Bird of Paradise, Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise, Magnificent Bird of Paradise, Glossy Manucode, Western Parotia, Black Sicklebill and etc.
If you are interested in visiting Tambrauw regency for birding and wildlife watching, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by email to: peace4wp@gmail.com or whatsapp to: +6381332245180.

Yellow-faced Myna

Yellow-faced Myna lives in tropical rainforest of New Guinea especially in lowland and lower montane region.
Yellow-faced Myna (Mino dumontii)
This is Yellow-face Myna - a large starling that lives in lowland and lower montane forest of New Guinea and its surrounding island. It saw the bird for the first time when I guided two Belgium tourists to Tambrauw mountains. After that, I saw the bird again in Klabolo forest of Sorong regency, in Mesirrokow forest of Manokwari as well as in Waigeo of Raja Ampat islands.
I made the above photograph when I went birding in Waigeo island of Raja Ampat. It was morning time when I saw the bird sitting on the branch of a tree above my head. In Wikipedia, it says that Yellow-faced Myna eats fruits and insects.
There is also Golden Myna (Mino anais) that has got black, white and yellow colors. These Golden Myna and Yellow-faced Myna can be watched in the mornings and in the afternoons in the forest of Tambrauw Mountains, Manokwari, Sorong, and Raja Ampat. Actually, they are not the only birds that tourists can watch while taking a birding tour with me in West Papua. From my previous birding tours, I saw a lot of species of woodland and coastal birds such as: Palm Cockatoo, Sulphur Crested Cockatoo, Eclectus Parrot, Yellow-capped Pygmy Parrot, Large Fig Parrot, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Pink-spotted Fruit Dove, Beautiful Fruit Dove, Great Cuckoo Dove.

There are also some Indonesian tourists who visited Susnguakti to watch Lesser Birds of Paradise.
Night Walk
Tour in the forest will be done both during the days and at nights. In the mornings and in the afternoons, we will walk under the canopy of the forest to watch birds, butterflies, insects, and tropical plants. At nights, we will walk through the forest to find cuscus possum, brown ground skink, and Papua dragon lizard. Wear hiking boots and socks to protect yourself from mosquito and snake. Sometimes we could see birds that sleep on the lower branches of trees. One example is the Spot-winged Monarch (Symposiarchus guttula). I was walking with 2 Dutch tourists and our local guide when we saw the bird. I and one of the tourists carefully aimed our cameras at the bird and then shot him several times. After that, we left him to continue our exploration of the forest.
Where to stay in Susnguakti forest
I and local villagers have prepared huts in the jungle for visitors to stay. We provide dome tents, mattrasses, pillows, sleeping bags, cooking and eating utensils to serve tourists who take birding and wildlife watching tour with us. These huts are located near a small river. These huts are not luxurious hotels but they are our only accommodation for visitors who want to watch paradise birds, cuscus possum, Papua dragon lizard, and a lot of unique vegetation in this lower montane forest of Arfak range.
What visitors need to bring:
Please, bring a good pair of binoculars, camera with telephoto lens, head torch, trousers, t-shirts (dark colour ones such as dark green, dark gray, or the camouflage colours), hiking boots or sport shoes with socks, personal toiletries, and towel, anti insect spray or lotion.

Nightwalk in Susnguakti Forest

Exploring the Susnguakti forest at night to see nocturnal animals

This reptile can be seen by tourists in Susnguakti forest in the south of Manokwari city.
Papua Dragon Lizard
Susnguakti is a rainforest area in the south of Manokwari city. It has been a destination for tourists who are interested in seeing wildlife. Every time I organize a birding and wildlife watching tour in this forest for visitors I always add nightwalk or night herping tour in the list of activities that we can do in the forest. When we do the nightwalk, we could see such animals as Cuscus Possum, bandicoot, Arfak Dragon Lizard,  Vogelkop Brown Ground Skink, White Snake (Micropechis small-eyed white snake), pygmy toad, moth, firefly and sleeping bird. There is glowing mushroom especially during wet season.
This New Guinea small eyed white snake lives in Susnguakti forest of Manokwari city.
White Snake Micropechis ikaheka

Don't Provoke the White Small-eyed Snakes

During the tour, visitors MUST NOT provoke snakes in the forest especially the ones that local people call Ular Putih (White Snake). This Micropechis ikaheka is very venomous and is considered as one of the deadliest reptiles in the world. One bite from this snake can be fatal. So, visitors must wear hiking boots or sport shoes and socks and maintain a safe distance from the snake if they see it in the jungle.
What to wear
To do the night herping tour, visitors need to wear long pants, shoes and socks, hand torch or head torch and camera. I and one or two local villagers conduct the night walk tours. We will explore the higher and lower elevation areas of the forest to find the nocturnal animals. It is an interesting activity for tourists because they are able to watch not only birds of paradise but also reptile and nocturnal animals of Arfak mountains.

Birding during the day

In addition to night tours, visitors can also do morning and afternoon hiking trips in Susnguakti forest to watch Lesser Birds of Paradise, King Bird of Paradise, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Magnificent Riflebird, Hooded Butcherbird, Beautiful Fruit Dove, Great Cuckoo Dove, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra and a lot of other tropical birds that live in the forest.

Rainforest Wildlife Watching Tour in Manokwari

This King Bird of Paradise was photographed in Susnguakti forest in the south of Manokwari city, Indonesia.
King Bird of Paradise in Susnguakti forest
of Manokwari
I have just completed a 3-day/ 2-night wildlife watching tour in Susnguakti forest of Manokwari with a Ducth couple. During the tour, we did morning, afternoon, and night walks in the forest to see its animals and plants. From all day walks, we saw Lesser Birds of Paradise, King Birds of Paradise, Beautiful Fruit Dove, Great Cuckoo Dove, Hooded Butcherbird, Rufous-bellied Kookaburra, and a brown bird which is perhaps a helmetted friarbird.
We also saw cruiser butterfly, birdwing butterfly Ornithoptera priamus and Swallow-tailed Blue Mountain Butterfly Papilio ulysses.
In the last day before we left our jungle base-camp, our local guide brought a bandicoot that had been caught by a trap. I covered her body, head and front legs and asked a local guide to release the lasso node that was tying her left rear leg. Slowly, she left us and ran into the bush again.

Night Walks in Susnguakti Forest

Night walk tour in Susnguakti forest can be done to watch marsupial animals and nocturnal reptile of New Guinea.
Papua Dragon Lizard
From 2 night walks that we did, we saw glowing mushrooms, very big ground skink lizards (whose length was approximately between 35 and 40 cm), and a Papua dragon lizard, a pygmy toad, cuscus possum and a venomous snake locally called Ular Putih. Susnguakti forest is as a touris destination is suitable for visitors who are physically fit. Before taking a rainforest tour in this place, I highly recommend that visitors take a regular jogging exercise at least three months before the tour.
What to bring
  • To watch birds and wild animals in this tropical rainforest, visitors need to wear a good pair of hiking shoes and socks, wear dark color clothing such as dark green or dark gray t-shirts and pants.
  • Binoculars, and camera with telephoto lens of up to 600 mm are highly recommended.
  • For night walk, a hand torch or a head torch will be needed. Don't forget to also bring a rain poncho.

Riverwalk Birding Tours in Manokwari

French tourist was taking riverwalk tour in Manokwari
Riverwalk Tour in Manokwari

Riverwalk and Birding Tour in Manokwari

There is a river that goes deeper into rainforest of  Manokwari regency. This forest is very suitable for birdwatchers who like to watch birds such as Sulphur-crested Cockatoo, Pinon Imperial Pigeon, Dollarbird, Yellow-faced Myna, Golden Myna, King Bird of Paradise, Lesser Bird of Paradise, Magnificent Riflebird, Papuan Hornbill, and Azure Kingfisher and a lot of other tropical birds.
Tropical rainforest that cover both sides of the river is the natural habitat these tropical birds as well as other animals such as cuscus possum, bandicoot, snake, butterflies, beetles and wild-pigs.
I have organized numerous riverwalk tours for visitors to this lowland forest of Manokwari. They came from as far as Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Germany, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Australia.
Birding is the main tourist attraction in this forest but visitors can also see unique tropical plants and animals of this forest.
Bird/ Wildlife Watching Optics
Pinon Imperial Pigeon can be watched by visitors in lowland forest of Manokwari, the capital of Papua Barat province in Indonesia.
Pinon Imperial Pigeon
I personally provide a Kinglux 20-60×60 spotting scope and a pair of Visionking 10×42 mm binoculars. However, I highly suggest that every visitor bring his or her own binoculars to enhance the birding or wildlife-watching experience. There are a lot of brands that are available in the market such as Leica, Swarovski, Nikon, Bushnell, Vortex and etc. I personally have tried some of them such as the Swarovski SLC 10x42 WB, and the Swarovski EL 8,5×42 7,6 degrees binoculars. There is also Eagle Optics 10×42 mm binoculars. Unfortunately, Eagle Optics as a manufacturer of high quality but more affordable birding binoculars have stopped their operation.

Field-guide Birding Book

For visitors who are serious about birdwatching in West Papua, a field-guide book: Birds of New Guinea written by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler is the the best companion for their trips. It can be ordered from Amazon online bookstore.

How to fly to Manokwari

  • Take an international flight from your country to Jakarta (the capital of the Indonesia)
  • After that take a domestic flight to Manokwari city. Airlines such as Garuda, Sriwijaya, Batik Air provide regular flights between Jakarta and Manokwari.

Camping and Riverwalk Birding Tours in Manokwari Forest

I offer camping and riverwalk tours for visitors who are interested in exploring the bio-diversity of lowland forest of Manokwari. Riverwalk, swimming and birdwatching are the main activities that we do during the tour. Visitors who take the tours come from the Netherlands, the United States, United Kingdom, Belgium, Frsnce, China, Switzerland, Sweden, and several other countries. They enjoy the tours for 3 to 5 days. For identification purposes, I use field guide book Birds of New Guinea written by Thane K. Pratt and Bruce Beehler. During the tours, we will stay in tents at the side of a river and do riverwalk tours along its banks to find tropical birds such birds as:
  • King Bird of Paradise
  • Magnificent Riflebird
  • Lesser Birds of Paradise
  • Yellow-faced Myna
  • Golden Myna
  • Papuan hornbill,
  • Sulphur Crested Cockatoo,
  • Palm Cockatoo
  • Black-capped Lory
  • Yellow-capped Pygmy Parrot
  • Moluccan King Parrot
  • Pesquet's Parrot (Psittrichas fulgidus)

  • Common Sandpiper
  • Olive-crowned Flowerpecker
  • Variable Goshawk
  • Black Sunbird
  • Yellow-bellied Longbill
  • Pygmy Longbill
  • and a lot of other tropical birds. In addition to birds, visitors can also see butterflies, beetles, wild flowers and a lot of unique plants of West Papua.
A good pair of binoculars, and spotting scope will enhance birding experience of the visitors. I use a pair of 10×42 Visionking binoculars and a 20-60×60 spotting scope plus a tripod. Because the open space is wide, it is easy to spot birds that fly across the river or perch on the branches of high trees.
Birds can be seen in trees that grow on both sides of the river. The riverside is one of the best places to watch birds because we can enjoy birding without having to walk up and down steep slopes of mountains. Visitors like the environment. They can enjoy swimming, sightseeing and birding at the same time.

Tropical Birding Tours in Susnguakti Forest

Birding and wildlife watching tour in Susnguakti forest of Arfak mountains of West Papua, Indonesia
King Bird of Paradise

Finding Paradise Birds

Susnguakti is the name of Lower Montane Forest of Arfak range in Manokwari regency. It is a recommended destination for tourists who are interested in hiking, camping, and observing rainforest animals, particularly birds of paradise, and plants that live in the area. I organize a 3 to 4 day wildlife and birdwatching tour to see Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor), King Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus regius), Magnificent Riflebird (Ptiloris magnificus), Common Paradise Kingfisher (Tanysiptera galatea), Hooded Butcherbird (Cracticus cassicus), Rainbow Lorikeet (Trichoglossus haematodus) and other tropical birds of West Papua. There is no guesthouse in the middle of the jungle. Visitors will stay in huts that we have built for visitors. Cooking and eating utensils have been prepared in the huts.

Lesser Birds of Paradise - the King of Seduction

Birding Adventure in Susnguakti rainforest of Manokwari
Male Lesser Birds of Paradise
Tropical birds are usually active in the mornings and in the afternoons. To watch Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor), visitors have to wake up at 05.00 for making preparations. After drinking tea or coffee and some biscuits, they could leave their tents for the birding ground that is located approximately 5 to 10 minutes walk to the south of the forest. Birds can be watched using binoculars and telephoto camera. Male lesser birds of paradise call their female counterparts and perform courtship dance in order to win their hearts. Several male birds compete one another to mate with the female birds. These birds of paradise have got several sex partners. They have been hunted since ancient times. So, they practice poligamy to survive. After 09.00 morning time, visitors can return to the basecamp and then continue their birding activities to higher elevation area.
The next target bird is King Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus regius) which lives in higher elevation area of Susnguakti forest. If we are lucky, we can also see Magnificent Birds of Paradise and Glossy Manucode.
In addition to birds, visitors can also watch Cuscus Possum, Bandicoot, and Soa-soa Lizards in the forest. A night walk in the forest will be organized by local guides for visitors to see these animals.

Birding Optics

Most birders know what to bring when they go on a tour to watch tropical birds in remote forest region. In general, birdwatchers bring a good pair of binoculars preferably 10×42 mm Swarovski, Leica, Zeiss, Nikon or Cannon. High definition birding binoculars are made of ED lenses and Bak 4 prism glasses. I personally have got a more affordable Visionking 10×42 mm binoculars and a 20-60×60 Kinglux spotting scope.

Extended Trip
In addition to birding in Manokwari, I can organize birding tours to Tambrauw mountains or to Raja Ampat islands.
Booking
Please, send me (Charles Roring) e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or whatsapp: +6281332245180.

Rainforest Birds in Lowland of Manokwari

Birding tour in Manokwari forest
Sulphur-crested Cockatoo
Tropical Birds
I often guide tourists to lowland forest area in Manokwari. We spend several days hiking, camping, birding and wildlife watching in tropical rainforest. My favorite destination is Mesirokow river or Susnguakti forest. In the middle of the jungle, there is no guesthouse, so we must stay in tents if we want to spend several days finding rainforest birds. From my previous trips in Mesirokow river, we were able to see Glossy Manucode (Manucodia ater), Blyth's hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus), Sulphur Crested Cockatoo (Cacatua galerita), Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), Eclectus Parrot (Eclectus roratus), Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon), Beautiful Fruit Dove (Ptilinopus pulchellus), Variable Goshawk (Accipiter hiogaster), Yellow-faced Myna (Mino dumontii), Golden Myna (Mino anais), and Little Egret (Egretta garzetta), Dollarbird (Eurystomus orientalis), Nightjar (which is usually seen at night) and etc.

Birding Optics
To watch these birds, visitors need do morning walks and late afternoon walks. Birds are usually active during that time. But riverwalk tour can also be carried out in the afternoon to increase the chance of seeing such birds as Little-ringed Plover (Charadrius dubius), Willy Wagtail (Rhipidura leucophrys), and Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus).
To enhance birding experience, visitors need a good pair of binoculars preferably the ones that are made of ED lenses and Bak4 prism glasses such as Swarovski EL 8.5×42 or Canon 15×50 IS UD 4.5° and Swarovski SLC 10×42 WB.
Riverwark and birding tour in Manokwari
Papuan Hornbill (Rhyticeros plicatus)
I personally bring more affordable binoculars such as the Visionking 10×42 mm and a Kinglux 20-60×60 spotting scope. Watching tropical birds with a spotting scope in open space such as the Mesirokow river greatly improves the birdwatching experience of visitors. I used to guide 3 French birdwatcher who brought Swarovski ATX 30-70×95 spotting scope. The images of birds this device produced were clear and sharp even though the birds were sitting on the branches of high trees and were far from us. Unfortunately, this device was very expensive. Only serious birdwatchers who have got money that will buy that device.
For taking pictures, DSLR Camera with 600 mm super telephoto lens is highly recommended but a bridge camera such as Canon SX 60HS, Nikon Coolpix P900 will give good pictures of tropical birds in distant trees or in the other side of the river.

Booking
If you are interested in taking a birding tour in lowland forest of Manokwari; Klasow valley of Sorong regency; The forest area near Sorong city and tropical jungle of Waigeo island in Raja Ampat, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or whatsapp: +6281332245180.

Rainforest Animals in Manokwari

I often guide tourists in tropical rainforest of Manokwari. The objective of the tour is to see the biodiversity of the environment both in lowland and highland region. These two environment have got diferent species of animals and plants.
Lowland and Lower Montane Region
There are two forest areas that I regularly visit, i.e.: Susnguakti Forest and Mesirokow Forest. Animals that I saw in these forests were:
  • Birds such as Lesser Birds of Paradise,  King Bird of Paradise, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Hooded Butcherbird, Coconut Lorikeet, Dwarf cassowary,
  • Mammals: Bandicoot, cuscus possum, fruit bats. I often see foot prints of wild pigs and deer in Mesirokow river.
  • Reptiles: Green tree lizard, blue tail lizard, Soa-soa lizard, Papuan iguana, white snake (which as venomous), and etc.
  • Amphibious: Frogs
  • Insect: Cruiser butterfly, priamus butterfly, taenaris catops butterfly, and beetles such as tiger beetle and eupholus schoenherri butterfly and etc.
Higher montane forest of Manokwari
Lesser Birds of Paradise in lower montane region
From my personal observation, big animals such as deer and wild pigs do not exist. But tourists are happy to visit the region to watch Vogelkop Bowerbird, Magnificent Bird of Paradise, and Western Parotia. There are butterflies such as Ornithoptera tithonus (birdwing family), and Taenaris schoenbergi kenricki.
There is another species of bird of paradise called Black Sicklebill at the elevation of 2,000 meters above sea level. To watch the bird, visitors need to wake up at 03.30 a.m. and make preparation. At 04.00, they can start hiking to the top of Mount Soyti. Local guide cannot fully guarantee that after a two hour of walking, they will be able to see the bird.

Rainforest Tours

Marsupial Animal in West Papua
Cuscus possum
I offer tours to rainforest near Manokwari city. The duration of the tour can be as short as 1 day to as long as 1 week or more. Because most of the activities will be carried out in the middle of the forest, we will stay in base-camps in the jungle. I provide tents, cooking and eating utensils. I also have got two pairs of Visionking binoculars which visitors and a Kinglux spotting scope 20-60x60 may use during the tours. However, I highly recommend that visitors bring their own birdwatching/ wildlife-watching optics as well as telephoto camera.
You need to wear t-shirts and short/ long hiking pants for the tours. Dark colours are better for watching animals. Head torch, anti insect spray are important too for the jungle tours.
For tours in Susnguakti forest, local guide, Mr. Yunus Sayori often conducts night walk in the jungle to find cuscus possum. He will immitate the sounds of female cuscus to attract male cuscus. When the male possum comes down through the hanging vines, He will turn on his torch or flash light so that visitors could see the nocturnal animal and then take picture.

Flights to Manokwari
Garuda, Sriwijaya, Batik, and have got regular flights between Manokwari and Jakarta city. You need to fly from your country to Jakarta and then take a domestic flight to Manokwari by one of the airlines that I mention above.
I can also organize rainforest animal watching tours in Klasow valley of Sorong regency and in Raja Ampat. For these sites, your flight destination should be Sorong city. You could visit traveloka.com to find schedules and ticket price.

King Bird of Paradise in Sorong forest
I have organised numerous hiking and birding trips to tropical forest of Sorong regency for tourists who come from Europe, North America, Australia and Asia. We went there to watch several species of birds of paradise such as Lesser Birds of Paradise (Paradisaea minor), King Bird of Paradise (Cicinnurus regius), Twelve-wired Bird of Paradise (Seleucidis melanoleuca), Magnificent Riflebird (Ptiloris magnificus), and a lot of other tropical birds that live in Klasow valley.
Birding Optics
Lowland Peltop
High quality binoculars such as Swarovski EL 8.5×42 or Canon 15×50 IS UD 4.5° Image Stabilizer are needed when visitors watch the paradise birds. In open habitat such as the cleared area of the village, visitors can use spotting scope to watch such birds as Moustached Treeswift, Blyth's hornbill, and Yellow-faced Myna that like to perch on the branches of high trees around the borders of the village.
The usual duration of the trip is 3 to 5 days with the number of participants between 4 to 6 tourists. During the birding tour, visitors could also see Pinon Imperial Pigeon (Ducula pinon), Golden Myna (Mino anais), Rufous-bellied Kookaburra (Dacelo gaudichaud), Yellow-billed Kingfisher, Red-breasted Kingfisher and Azure Kingfisher, and sometimes the Rainbow Bee-eater.

Tropical Birding Tour in Manokwari and Sorong

Birding tour in the forest of Manokwari
Black-winged Monarch
Here are some photos of birds in the forest of Arfak mountains that I saw when I guided a Swiss and a Thai tourists on a 4-day/ 3-night hiking and birding-tour. The first one was Black-winged Monarch (Monarcha frater). The bird was quite active in the morning hopping from one to another branch of Arwop tree. During the birding tour in this tropical montane forest of Manokwari, I also saw Grey-wagtail (Motacilla cinerea) - a migrant bird, Goldenface (Pachycare flavogriseum), Feline Owlet-nightjar (Aegotheles insignis), Sclater's whistler and a lot of other birds.
After guiding tourists in Arfak mountains, I continued my trip to Sorong city where I visited hill forest of the regency. From the short trip, I saw Helmeted Friarbird, Yellow-faced Myna, and Olive-crowned Flowerpecker. I was able to take some pictures of Yellow-bellied Sunbird too.
Birding tour with Charles Roring in West Papua
If you are interested in taking a tropical birding tour with me as your guide, you need to fly to Manokwari city or Sorong city (which is the main gate to Raja Ampat).
I could meet you at the airport or at the hotel where you stay and organize your birdwatching trip to the forest.
Birding Device
Birdwatchers usually bring binoculars, spotting scope and telephoto camera. When I went birding in the forest of Sorong, I brought my Fujifilm HS50EXR, with its 42× zoom that was equal to 1,000 mm, I was able to take picture of birds in distant trees. For binoculars, I highly recommend the Swarovski EL 8.5×42 mm or other ones that are equipped with ED lens and Bak4 prism glass.

Nature Tour near Sorong City

Nature tour near Sorong city
Granite Stone River in Sorong city Forest - West Papua
Yesterday, I had a nature tour to a forest near Sorong city. It was a nice experience because I could see hill savanna, rainforest, some species of birds and wild flowers.
I started hiking at 14.30 and finished 17.30. The first parts of the trails consisted of hills that were covered by tall grass with some trees around. As I walked deeper into the jungle, I could see more big trees, and birds activities. As I walked along the ridge of the hills, I could watch Helmetted Fiarbird (Philemon buceroides), Yellow-faced Myna (Mino dumontii), Olive-back Sunbird (Cynniris jugularis), Olive-crowned Flowerpecker (Dicaeum pectorale), Coconut Lorikeet, Black Lory and a couple of black and white birds which I could not recognize. Perhaps, they were Hooded Butcherbird.
Guided hiking tour in Sorong forest of Indonesia
Terrestrial Orchid Flowers in Sorong City Forest
I also saw a green jewel beetle, butterflies, and some terrestrial orchid that grow in the slopes of the hills among the tall grass. I was quite surprized to see a river full of large granite stones with beautiful view of green rainforest on its surroundings.
Sorong city has been an important gate for visitors who want to visit Raja Ampat. Most of the attraction of the archipelago is coral reef. For visitors who are interested in rainforest, Sorong can be an affordable alternative destination.
Sorong city can easily be reached by plane and ships. Pelni passenger ships have got regular service that connect this city with other major cities in Indonesia. There are also daily flight services between Sorong and Jakarta (the capital of Indonesia) and Manado city (an important tourist destination in North Sulawesi province). If you fly to Sorong city, I could meet you at the airport or hotel where you stay and organize a tour to this rainforest. Don't forget to bring binoculars, camera with telephoto lens and anti-insect lotion.
If you are interested in taking a hiking tour in Sorong, please, contact me (Charles Roring) by e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or text message to my whatsapp: +6281332245180.

Rainforest Birdwatching Tour in Sorong City

Yellow-bellied Sunbird in Sorong forest
Most tourists who want to visit Raja Ampat must fly to Sorong city first. After that, they could cross the sea to one of the islands in Raja Ampat to enjoy their holiday. After spending a few days to one or two weeks in the islands, they will return to Sorong city to take their return flight  - back to their country. Usually, they wait for one to three days. There are also visitors who are interested in exploring nature of the mainland of West Papua.
Olive-crowned Sunbird in Sorong forest
As a tourist guide, I offer tours for tourists who are interested in hiking and birding in the rainforest of Sorong regency. The duration of the tour can be as short as half day to as long as four days. During the tours, visitors will be able to see the ecosystem of rainforest, beautiful hills, birds, butterflies and unique tropical plants of Sorong regency.
Helmetted Friarbird in Sorong forest
Visitors need a good pair of binoculars, hiking shoes, camera, and if necessary a set of spotting scope.
I personally recommend Swarovski EL 8.5×42 or Canon Image Stabilizer 15×50 IS UD 4.5° that provide high resolution image with rich and true colors of nature and wildlife.
If you are interested, please, contact me: Charles Roring by e-mail to: peace4wp@gmail.com or by whatsapp: +6281332245180.
